North-East Line Stations Guide: Every NEL Stop from Punggol Coast to HarbourFront

The North-East Line (NEL) is the train line that runs Hougang’s daily life. It links the north-east towns of Punggol, Sengkang and Hougang with Serangoon, the city fringe, the Orchard end of town, the Singapore River, Chinatown and HarbourFront. This guide works like an NEL MRT map in words, going through the North East Line one station at a time, so you can see what each stop offers and how far it is from Hougang MRT (NE14).

The North East Line at a glance

• 17 stations, coded NE1 (HarbourFront) to NE18 (Punggol Coast). The codes skip NE2, which is not an operating station.
• Six MRT interchanges: HarbourFront, Outram Park, Chinatown, Dhoby Ghaut, Little India and Serangoon.
• Two LRT connections: Sengkang and Punggol.
• One future interchange: Hougang, when the Cross Island Line (CRL) Phase 1 opens, targeted around 2030.
• Punggol Coast (NE18) is the newest station. It extended the line towards the Punggol Digital District.

Stop counts below are the number of stations you pass through from Hougang, counting the arrival station. They are not journey times. Real travel time depends on waiting, walking inside stations and time of day.

City-bound stations, one by one

NE13 Kovan (1 stop)

Kovan is Hougang’s nearest neighbour. It is best known for food, with Kovan Market & Food Centre and plenty of coffeeshops, plus Heartland Mall above the station. Many Hougang residents treat Kovan as an extension of their own town. Our Kovan and Serangoon Gardens guide covers it in more depth.

NE12 Serangoon (2 stops)

Serangoon is the most useful interchange for Hougang residents. Here you switch to the Circle Line for Paya Lebar, Bishan, Buona Vista and one-north. The station sits below NEX, a large regional mall, and Serangoon Gardens with Chomp Chomp Food Centre is a short bus ride away.

NE11 Woodleigh (3 stops)

Woodleigh serves the newer Bidadari estate. The Woodleigh Residences and The Woodleigh Mall together form one of Singapore’s integrated developments, a useful reference point when you think about what a mall-and-MRT project looks like once it is lived in.

NE10 Potong Pasir and NE9 Boon Keng (4 and 5 stops)

These two are mainly residential stops on the city fringe. Neither is an interchange, and most Hougang commuters simply ride through them. They matter because they show how fast the NEL moves from the heartland into the city fringe.

NE8 Farrer Park (6 stops)

NE7 Little India (7 stops)

Little India is an interchange with the Downtown Line (DTL) and one of Singapore’s best-known heritage districts. KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital is nearby, which many young families will note.

NE6 Dhoby Ghaut (8 stops)

Dhoby Ghaut is a triple-line hub: NEL, North-South Line and Circle Line. It is at the Orchard Road end of the shopping belt, with Plaza Singapura (a CICT mall) connected to the station. From here, the North-South Line takes you along Orchard or into Raffles Place.

NE5 Clarke Quay and NE4 Chinatown (9 and 10 stops)

Clarke Quay puts you on the Singapore River, with riverside dining and nightlife. Chinatown, one stop on, is a Downtown Line interchange and a heritage area known for shophouses, food and temples. Both are within walking distance of parts of the CBD.

NE3 Outram Park (11 stops)

Outram Park is a three-line interchange with the East-West Line and the Thomson-East Coast Line. It serves the Singapore General Hospital campus and the southern edge of the CBD.

NE1 HarbourFront (12 stops)

The end of the line. HarbourFront connects to the Circle Line, VivoCity and the route to Sentosa. It is a direct ride from Hougang, so a family day out to the south coast does not need a transfer.

North-bound stations

NE15 Buangkok (1 stop)

Buangkok is a mainly residential stop between Hougang and Sengkang.

NE16 Sengkang (2 stops)

Sengkang connects to the Sengkang LRT and sits below Compass One. Sengkang General Hospital and Sengkang Riverside Park are in the wider town. Sengkang Grand Residences, another integrated condo with a mall and bus interchange, is in the town centre.

NE17 Punggol (3 stops)

Punggol connects to the Punggol LRT and to Waterway Point. Punggol Waterway Park and, further out, Coney Island are popular weekend spots.

NE18 Punggol Coast (4 stops)

The newest station on the line serves the Punggol Digital District (PDD), with JTC business parks for the digital economy and the new Singapore Institute of Technology campus. For Hougang residents working at PDD, this is a direct ride against the main morning crowd. More in our PDD guide.

Hougang sits roughly in the middle of the line. That is a practical advantage: you are a short ride from the jobs and amenities of the north-east and a direct ride from the city. • How your household’s key trips (work, school, parents’ homes) map onto the NEL and the future CRL.
• Whether your trip needs a transfer at a busy interchange such as Dhoby Ghaut or Outram Park during peak hours.
