Commuting from Hougang Central: MRT Routes to the CBD, Orchard, one-north and More
Route-by-route commuting guide from Hougang MRT (NE14): the CBD, Orchard, HarbourFront, Paya Lebar, one-north, Punggol Digital District, and the east and west via the Cross Island Line, plus driving via KPE, TPE and CTE.
For most buyers, the commute is the first practical question after price. This guide maps out how you would get from Hougang MRT and Hougang Central to Singapore’s main work and lifestyle hubs, by train and by car, and what changes when the Cross Island Line (CRL) arrives. LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) is planned with a direct link to Hougang MRT (NE14), so the station is effectively your front door.
We describe routes in stops and transfers, not minutes. Journey times depend on waiting time, walking within stations and time of day, so treat any timings you see elsewhere as estimates and try the route yourself at your usual hour.
Hougang MRT station (NE14): lines and connections
Hougang is on the North-East Line (NEL), which runs from Punggol Coast through Sengkang and Hougang, into the city and down to HarbourFront. Heading towards the city, the stations are Kovan, Serangoon, Woodleigh, Potong Pasir, Boon Keng, Farrer Park, Little India, Dhoby Ghaut, Clarke Quay, Chinatown, Outram Park and HarbourFront. Serangoon, two stops away, is the key interchange with the Circle Line (CCL).
The Hougang Central integrated development will also include a new Hougang bus interchange, so feeder and trunk buses start from the same hub.
Exits, buses and connections
- North-East Line: Hougang MRT station is on the underground NEL, with Kovan (NE13) one stop towards the city and Buangkok (NE15) one stop towards Sengkang and Punggol.
- Buses: Hougang Central already works as the town’s bus hub, and the integrated development includes a new Hougang bus interchange, so the train-to-bus change stays in one place.
- Shopping: Hougang Mall is about a 2-minute walk from the site, according to the agent’s brochure, with a new mall of around 300,000 sq ft NLA to come as part of the integrated development.
- Cross Island Line: when CRL Phase 1 opens, targeted around 2030, Hougang MRT station becomes an NEL–CRL interchange.
- Exits: station exits and linkways may change as the integrated development and CRL station are built. Check the station maps from SBS Transit or LTA for the current exits rather than older guides.

To the CBD and Raffles Place
There is no one-seat ride from Hougang to Raffles Place, but it is a single transfer. Most commuters pick one of two changes:
- Change at Dhoby Ghaut to the North-South Line, then two stops (City Hall, Raffles Place).
- Change at Outram Park to the East-West Line, then two stops (Tanjong Pagar, Raffles Place). This suits offices in the Tanjong Pagar end of the CBD.
For offices around Chinatown, Clarke Quay and Outram, the NEL takes you there directly. Chinatown also connects to the Downtown Line for the Marina Bay side of the city.
Orchard, Dhoby Ghaut and HarbourFront
This is where Hougang’s position on the NEL shines. Dhoby Ghaut, at the city end of Orchard Road and next to the Plaza Singapura and Bras Basah area, is a direct ride. So is HarbourFront, for VivoCity, the waterfront and Sentosa. For students and shift workers heading to Little India, Farrer Park or Boon Keng, the NEL is direct too.
Paya Lebar and one-north via Serangoon
Serangoon, two stops from Hougang, is the gateway to the Circle Line.
- Paya Lebar: change at Serangoon, then four CCL stops (Bartley, Tai Seng, MacPherson, Paya Lebar). Paya Lebar Quarter and the Paya Lebar commercial hub sit here, with the East-West Line interchange.
- Buona Vista and one-north: change at Serangoon and ride the CCL westwards through Bishan, Caldecott, Botanic Gardens and Holland Village to Buona Vista and then one-north. It is a longer ride with one transfer, and suits people working in the one-north business park or around the research and media cluster there.
Punggol Digital District
For jobs at the Punggol Digital District (PDD), a planned area of about 50 ha with JTC business parks and the new Singapore Institute of Technology campus, take the NEL away from the city towards Punggol Coast (NE18): Buangkok, Sengkang, Punggol, Punggol Coast. That is a reverse-direction commute, which usually means a less crowded train in the morning peak. More on the district in our PDD guide.
Before and after the Cross Island Line
CRL Phase 1, targeted around 2030, has 12 stations: Aviation Park, Loyang, Pasir Ris East, Pasir Ris, Tampines North, Defu, Hougang, Serangoon North, Tavistock, Ang Mo Kio, Teck Ghee and Bright Hill. Hougang becomes an NEL–CRL interchange, which changes the east–west trips most of all.

For Changi Airport itself, the rail route today is NEL to Serangoon, CCL to Paya Lebar, then the East-West Line and its airport branch. With luggage, many travellers prefer a taxi via the expressways. CRL Phase 1 ends at Aviation Park, which serves the aviation cluster rather than the passenger terminals. By car: KPE, TPE and CTE
- Kallang–Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE): the main road link from Hougang towards the city, Marina Bay and the east coast, much of it running underground.
- Tampines Expressway (TPE): east towards Tampines, Pasir Ris and Changi, and west towards Seletar and the northern expressways. Useful for Seletar Aerospace Park.
- Central Expressway (CTE): accessible for trips to the city and the north-south corridor.
Peak-hour traffic matters more than distance, so drive your route at your usual time before relying on it.
What this means for buyers
- City workers get direct NEL access to Dhoby Ghaut, Chinatown and Outram, and a single transfer to Raffles Place.
- East-side workers (Tampines, Pasir Ris, Changi aviation cluster) gain the most once the CRL opens.
- PDD and Sengkang workers have a short reverse-direction ride on the NEL.
- Two-income households working in different directions benefit from living at a future two-line interchange.
